5 Tips for Managing Millennials

Young Professional

The workplace is changing, with Millennials making up the majority of it. In fact, as of 2017, 56 million workers were born between 1981 and 1996. Thatā€™s compared to Generation X, which accounted for about 53 million, and Baby Boomers, coming in at around 41 million. Whatā€™s more is that by 2025, this group is slated to make up 75% of the workforce.

How can you get the most from them?

You have to approach the job of managing them a bit differently. They have characteristics, attitudes, and habits that vary significantly from earlier generations. To help you harness their assets so that they can thrive in your organization, here are some tips to keep in mind:

Tip #1: Leverage their electronic literacy.

This generation grew up with phones and computers and is by far the most literate compared to their older counterparts at work. This is a plus, one you can use to your advantage by relying on them to expand your companyā€™s technological innovations both in-house and in the marketplace.

Tip #2: Show them the impact theyā€™re making.

According to studies, Millennials ā€“ more than other generations ā€“ want to make a positive difference. Therefore, itā€™s important for them to understand how their position plays a role in the companyā€™s overall health and viability. To do that, demonstrate to them in clear ways the connection their daily duties have on customers, the department, and the organization as a whole.

Tip #3: Get to know them.

Millennials want to know their bosses and peers on a more personal level. Managing them is helpful because it will allow you to find out what drives them and keep them motivated. At the same time, it goes a long way toward building bonds of loyalty and trust.

Tip #4: Give them the work-life balance they crave.

For Millennials, work-life balance is critically important. They want to perform their jobs well but also have enough time and energy for healthy home life. Thatā€™s why offering perks, such as flexible hours and telecommuting, are so attractive to this generation.

Tip #5: Provide feedback.

Millennials are used to getting feedback from parents, teachers, and professors. Following suit will help you better manage this generation of workers to build on their strengths and work on weaknesses. Likewise, offering praise when itā€™s due is another easy and effective way to motivate Millennials.
