Mistake #1: Not asking good questions.

Your hiring decision is deeply impacted by the questions you ask during the interview. If you ask the wrong ones, then you’re not going to get the information you need to make the best choice possible.

Instead of following boilerplate or generic ones, take the time to review the job posting, make a list of what you’re looking for, and develop meaningful questions that will help you screen for the qualifications you need.

Also, before you meet with each candidate, review their resume again. This can spark some candidate-specific questions you have and help you to dive deeper into their background so you can better discern if they’re the right fit.

Mistake #2: Not asking the same questions across candidates.

While your conversation with each candidate will often lead you into different directions about their unique abilities and experiences, it’s important to ask every candidate the same core questions. If you don’t, then you won’t be able to compare them easily at the end of the process and will have a much harder time making a decision, as a result.

Another helpful tip to ensure consistency is to create a scoring system for answers. You have a certain set of expectations. So as candidates respond to each question, give them points – from 1 to 5 – based on the quality of their answers and how well you think they’ll meet your hiring needs.

Mistake #3: Letting bias impact the process.

Unconscious or not, bias is a very real problem when it comes to the interview process. The best way to ensure it doesn’t become an issue when you’re hiring is to follow the steps above by asking every candidate the same questions and using a scoring system to assess their answers.

Another way is to rely on a panel of people to interview candidates. Having multiple perspectives from others with diverse experience can help cut down on bias.

Also, just being aware of bias – and the fact that people naturally gravitate toward others that are like them – can go a long way to ensure it doesn’t impact your hiring decision.

Mistake #4: Scheduling too many interviews in a day.

If you set aside a whole day just for interviewing, it might make sense for your schedule. However, the candidates you screen in the late afternoon won’t get the same level of attention as those you interviewed earlier in the day. This isn’t fair to them and can also impact the effectiveness of your hiring process.

Instead, only schedule a few interviews, three or four, in a single day and take breaks in between. That way, you can ensure you’re as fresh as possible, giving every candidate your full attention.
